COGNITION AND LEARNING

This course looks at supporting children and young people with long-term cognition and learning difficulties, covering moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD) and profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). It also looks at specific learning difficulties and support with EHCPs. 

The modules in this course are:

  2. Adaptive teaching to support children with moderate learning difficulties (MLD) 
  3. Supporting children and young people with severe learning difficulties (SLD) and profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD)

This module provides an overview of what is included in this course on cognition and learning needs, as well as some definitions of key terminology which might be helpful when working through this course.

1. Introduction to cognition and learning needs

This module provides an introduction to cognition and learning needs and looks at reasonable adjustments which should be made in each setting. It also looks at how to adapt your teaching to help all learners to read.

2. Adaptive teaching strategies to support CYP with moderate learning difficulties

This module looks at adaptive teaching strategies to support all learners, ensuring we have high aspirations for all. This module also covers targeted strategies to support CYP with moderate learning difficulties (MLD).

3. Supporting children and young people with SLD and PMLD

This module looks at best practice to support children and young people with severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties. It also covers EHCPs and provides top tips for SENCOs when working with LAs and supporting parents carers.

4. Supporting children and young people with SpLD

This module covers learning difficulties which impact one specific area of learning, in particular looking at needs in line with dyslexia and dyscalculia.
