This course will provide key information and resources to support your practice when working with children who have social, emotional or mental health needs. This course begins with an outline of what will be covered and key terminology, and then consists of the following modules:

  1. SEND and anxiety or depression
  2. Disordered eating and SEND
  3. Behaviour as a communication of need
  4. ADHD

0. Course Outline

This introduction to the SEMH course provides a description of what to expect, as well as key terminology which will be useful to have on hand during the training.

1. SEND and anxiety/or depression

This module introduces SEMH and focuses on how to support children and young people with anxiety and depression.

2. Disordered eating and SEND

This module looks at different types of eating disorder and how to support children and young people who have disordered eating in your setting.

3. Behaviour as a communication of need

This module looks at how we can understand children and young people's needs by examining the root cause of behaviour, rather than just the actions we see on the surface.

4. ADHD

This module looks at how ADHD might present in children and young people, in particular the difference between girls and boys, and how to support these children in your setting.

What you'll learn

  • Understand the impact of social, emotional and mental health difficulties, in particular for children and young people with additional needs
  • Understand how to identify signs of disordered eating within children and young people, and what next steps to take
  • Learn strategies to understand the root cause of behaviour to be able to support an individual child's needs
  • Understand how ADHD might present in boys and girls, and how you can adapt your teaching to support them
