Understanding the Behaviour Beneath the Surface
An upcoming webinar, Big Feelings and Big Reactions: Making Sense of Your Child’s Behaviour, hosted by Dr Daniel Weisberg, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Managing Director of CAYP Psychology, will explore the emotional and psychological factors that sit behind behaviours commonly seen at home and in school. The session draws on psychological theory, clinical practice and research into child emotional development.
The webinar is expected to hold clear professional relevance for SENCOs, teachers, therapists and school leaders. Dr Weisberg will focus on understanding what behaviour is communicating, rather than responding to behaviour in isolation, an approach increasingly reflected in current psychological and educational practice.
CAYP state that the session will explore distinctions such as meltdowns versus tantrums, alongside common triggers including anxiety, sensory overload and emotional burnout. The discussion will also consider how these challenges can affect learning, engagement and attendance, and how co-regulation strategies may be applied across home and school environments.
Practical strategies will be shared to support emotional regulation, reduce escalation, and navigate high-stress moments, tools that are directly transferable to classroom practice, pastoral support and multi-agency working. The session will also touch on when to consider professional support and how to collaborate effectively with families and schools.
The webinar will take place next Tuesday 13th in CAYP’s Virtual Office, with questions submitted in advance helping to shape the discussion.
