Your FAQs answered: Online EHCP courses
Which course should I take if I want to become an EHCP writer?
For aspiring EHCP writers, we recommend our Combined EHCP Writing Package, which includes the following courses:
- Fundamentals of Writing EHC Plans – this course covers statutory requirements, structure, timescales and principles of effective EHCP writing
- In-depth EHC Plan Writing – this course provides detailed guidance, best practice and practical plan writing assignments with trainer feedback
Together, these courses deliver comprehensive, from-scratch training worth 60 CPD hours, designed to equip learners with the EHCP skills and knowledge required by employers.
Is the training recognised or accredited?
Yes. Most of our courses, including both of the above plan writing courses, are CPD accredited by the CPD Standards Office.
At present, there is no nationally recognised or standardised qualification for developing EHC Plans, despite this being a specialist task. We created our courses in response to that gap, drawing on over 29 years’ experience writing SEN Statements/EHCPs for more than 70% of Local Authorities in England, and training hundreds of EHCP writers.
How does the In-depth EHC Plan Writing course work?
The In-depth EHC Plan Writing is an advanced course that combines online study with plan writing assignments. This practical element allows learners to apply new knowledge and gain valuable experience in producing real-world EHCPs, whilst receiving instructor feedback for select assignments.
As with all of our training, the course format is flexible online self-study, meaning you can start anytime and work at your own pace. Course licenses are valid for one year, but extensions can be requested if needed.
Are there any entry requirements?
No prior qualifications or experience are required for our courses. Your choice of starting point for EHCP writing courses depends on your familiarity with EHCPs: many learners begin with the Fundamentals of Writing EHC Plans course before progressing to the In-depth EHC Plan Writing course, although those with some experience of EHCPs sometimes move straight to the advanced course.
What are the job prospects after completing the EHCP writer training?
There are several avenues that you could go down in terms of a job as an EHCP writer, including working directly within Local Authority SEND teams, working as a freelance plan writer or working for a plan writing company (such as Enhance!).
Whilst individuals’ success upon applying for EHCP writing jobs cannot be guaranteed, plan writing is a specialist task that requires specific training, which currently is not provided elsewhere. Our EHCP writing training is highly regarded within the SEND sector and provides the specialist knowledge and practical skills needed for EHCP roles.
Which course is best for school staff or education professionals?
School-based staff involved in submitting requests for assessments and/or the actual EHCP assessment, development and review process often find the following courses most relevant:
- EHC Needs Assessments: Requests and Education Advice – this CPD accredited course covers the full EHCP process, how to request assessments and how to write statutory advice
- Bitesize Amending EHC Plans – this short course is ideal for those leading or contributing to annual reviews and plan amendments
What course or package would suit Local Authority SEND teams?
The Fundamentals of Writing EHC Plans is a popular choice for Local Authority SEND teams as induction training for new staff members, or as refresher training for existing staff. Our range of Bitesize courses are also often used to upskill staff on certain improvement focus areas, such as Preparing for Adulthood, writing outcomes and amending plans. All of these courses are available together in the LA SEND Officer Training Package, and discounts are available for purchasing multiple licenses.
I just want to understand EHCPs better – which course should I take?
For professionals or organisations seeking a broad understanding of EHCPs (without plan writing responsibilities), we recommend the Overview of EHC Plan Assessment Process course.
This CPD accredited course looks at:
- The stages of the EHCP process
- The structure of plans and function of each section
- The roles of assessing professionals
- Reviewing and updating EHCPs
This introductory course is perfect for those new to SEND or involved in supporting the EHCP process, rather than drafting plans.
