If you’re passionate about supporting children and young people with SEND, and want a flexible, impactful career where your writing skills can make a difference, becoming an EHCP writer could be the ideal next step.

What does an EHCP writer actually do?

Writing an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is no small task, but it’s one that can have a real impact. As an EHCP writer, your job is to take detailed information from various professional assessment reports and turn it into a single, well-structured plan that clearly outlines a child or young person’s special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).

EHC plans need to meet several requirements: they must address all identified areas of need, follow the legal guidelines set out in the SEND Code of Practice, and be written in a way that’s clear, consistent and easy for everyone involved to understand. This means you’ll need to be confident with analysing complex information and distilling it into precise but accessible language. And because each Local Authority uses its own EHCP template, you’ll also need to be comfortable working within structured formats.

What skills do you need to become an EHCP writer?

You don’t need a set background to get started with EHCP writing, but there are a few core skills and areas of knowledge that really help:

  • A solid understanding of the SEND Code of Practice and statutory EHCP requirement
  • Strong skills in analysing, organising, and summarising information
  • The ability to write clearly, professionally, and with attention to detail

Experience in education, SEND, social care or a related field can be a bonus, but it’s not essential. Many people come into EHCP writing from different backgrounds and train specifically for this highly specialised role. Taking part in a dedicated training programme and earning a recognised accreditation can really help you stand out and show employers that you’re ready to take on this important work.

Where can EHCP writers find work?

Once trained, there are several routes you can take to start working as an EHCP writer. Some people join Local Authority SEND teams directly, while others work freelance through specialist recruitment agencies that place temporary staff. Another option is working with an external plan writing company, such like Enhance EHC, who partner with Local Authorities to provide high-quality EHCP writing support.

This flexibility allows you to choose the kind of working environment that suits you best, depending on whether you prefer the structure of public sector employment or the independence of freelance work.
