The 2023 Tes SEND Show takes over The Business Design Centre on 13 & 14 October. It aims to bring together those who work in the SEND sector to discuss and learn more about how they can enrich the lives of pupils with SEND. To give you more insight into the two-day event, here is a quick overview of three talks that are set to take place.

Saturday’s keynote talk, Harnessing the memory superpowers of children with learning needs, will focus on children with learning needs and their memory ‘superpowers’. Despite the fact children with learning needs such as dyslexia, ADHD and autism can experience difficulties with learning, the talk will identify strengths these students have and how to maximise them. Discover how to use research-based strategies to uncover these memory ‘superpowers’ in the classroom from Psychology Professor and Author, Dr. Tracy Packiam-Alloway, Educational Consultant & Behaviour Advisor, Marie Gentles, and the Tes SEND Show Exhibition Director Beverley Walters.

On Friday, Stephen Parsons, a Speech and Language Therapist, leads a talk on Whole school systems to support students with Developmental Language Disorder. On average 2 students in every class have Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), however few are aware of DLD. The session will act as a quick and practical guide on identifying and supporting students with DLD. By the end of the session, attendees will understand how DLD presents itself in a classroom setting, be supplied with resources to use and gain an overview of whole school systems.

On Saturday, Occupational Therapist, Kim Griffin, will discuss the topic of sensory strategies in the session Success with sensory strategies at school. The session aims to help guide SENCOs on how to successfully use sensory toys and strategies to help children in the classroom. By the end of the talk, delegates will understand the purpose of using sensory strategies, when it is appropriate and how to monitor the effectiveness of these techniques.
