The 2024 Tes SEND Show offers another jam-packed programme of seminars and we've picked a few seminars for you to look out for across the two days.
Friday will kick off with a keynote address - What's next for SEND? delivered by Amanda Allard, Director of the Council for Disabled Children, followed by a panel discussion with Annamarie Hassall from nasen, Duncan Casburn (aka PDA DAD UK) and John Camp OBE from The Compass Partnership of Schools. This address and subsequent discussion is free for all to attend, so don't miss out by arriving at the show early!
Sessions take place over six rooms, inlcuding The importance of assessing for teacher intervention in maths learning from The Dyscalculia Network's Rob Jennings and Cat Eadle. Sarah Moseley is also back this year, alongside Jonathan Bryan and Chantal Bryan OBE, to discuss Creating an inclusive literacy curriculum.
The pre-lunch seminars cover a range of topics, including assistive technology (Martin Bailey), reaching missing pupils with SLCN (Kate Freeman), and Ofsted inspections (Jo Petch). If you're an early years practitioner, Julie Revel's seminar on Strengthening inclusive practice to support children with SEND in the early years might be the slot for you.
If you work in a secondary school, Wendy Lee's post-lunch seminar on Identifying and supporting students with SLCN in secondary schools might be one to attend. Meanwhile, both Zoe Wilson and Carrie Caceres-Taguiang will look at Social, Emotional and Mental Health with seminars on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) respectively.
And where to round off day one? The final slot includes An overview of EHCP's from Elizabeth Deere or insight into How to support autistic girls from Sarah-Jane Critchley.
Day two (Saturday 12th October) commences with a keynote address from Alex Elander-Phoenix on Trauma, Recovery and Resilience - sustaining relationships that meet needs. Morning seminars start with an interactive presentation from Dr Susie Nyman - ideal for those working with sixth form or further education students. Or you can listen to Shiraz Ayub and Loretta Knop offer an informative seminar in this slot on Achieving better outcomes for children with a vision impairment, following the journey of a child with sight loss from their early years through key educational transitions.
The power of positive psychology and Forming connections with children who have experienced trauma head up the social, emotional and mental health sessions pre-lunch. Meanwhile Anne Sheppee and Fee Kempton look at technology through the lens of AI in their session Empowering neurodivergent learners through the use of AI.
The two day event closes on some insightful talks, including Jane Whitby's seminar on Breaking the pupil to prison pipeline or Paul Bray on Relationships and sexuality education for SEND learners.
