This evidence-based online training package from the Department for Education is for all secondary school practitioners and aims to build capacity and confidence to enable staff to support reading in all secondary students.

The training comprises:

  • a practitioner package for teachers and teaching assistants
  • a leader package for all school leaders to build their knowledge and aid CPD delivery for practitioners

Both teacher and leader packages include a series of short videos and accompanying guidance.

This teacher package includes 11 videos that provide opportunities to reflect, introduce research on secondary reading and outlines seven strategies for supporting reading in the classroom. This teacher package guidance provides an introduction and should be used whilst watching the videos to aid reflection and note taking. The training takes approximately one hour to complete. The training can be completed individually, or within
a wider group.

To complete the training you will need:

  • this guidance and a pen or electronic device to make notes
  • a laptop, tablet or mobile phone with access to the internet to watch the videos, headphones may be helpful
