In this clip from the SEND Network Podcast, neurodiversity consultant, teacher and inclusion specialist Simon Airey reflects on his experience following a late autism diagnosis. Simon discusses alexithymia, sensory and emotional overload, autistic burnout and the cumulative effect of navigating unexpected changes throughout a school day.

He also explains how understanding his autism has helped him recognise his own needs, communicate more openly and feel more confident asking for space when things become overwhelming. The conversation also explores shutdowns, masking and why seemingly small events can sometimes feel disproportionately difficult when someone is already overloaded.
